Day 3 Morning drive to Polonnaruwa, visiting enroute Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage The elephants are free to roam freely around the sanctuary and witness the young feeding or bathing in the nearby river. In the evening arrive Polonnaruwa, the 1000-year-old medieval capital of Sri Lanka. For three centuries Polonnaruwa was the royal capital of both the Chola and Sinhalese kingdoms. Highlights include the world renowned Buddha statues and the "Sea of Parakrama," a 2500-hectare man made reservoir built in 1186 AD. Overnight in Dambulla. Day 4 Anuradhapura- Aukana Buddha After breakfast depart for Anuradhapura, the first capital of Sri Lanka. The sacred city of Anuradhapura, founded in the 3rd century BC is venerated as the Capital City of Buddhism. The scared Bo Tree grown from a sapling of the tree, under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, is the oldest living tree in documented history. In its vicinity are the remains of the Brazen Palace, the towering Ruwanveliseya Dagaba, the Seated Samadhi Buddha, Temples, Palaces and Parks, all of which bear testimony to a proud and imaginative people. A mere eight miles away is Mihintale the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It is a mountain monastery connected with Arahat Mahinda who brought Buddhism to the island in 247 BC. Lunch En-Route. On your way back, pay a visit to the famous "Aukana Buddha statue". Day 5 Sigiriya, Dambulla Cave Temple, Spice Gardens, to Elkaduwa On our way to Elkaduwa we visit Sigiriya and Dambulla. We climb the world famous Sigiriya Rock fortress, King Kashyapa built this palace like fortress and now this monument is known to be the 8th wonder of the world. After this visit, we proceed to the Dambulla Cave Temple, which is one of the most important sites of Buddhist pilgrimage and famous for its beautiful rock paintings and rock temples. The heady mix of ancient art and religious activity combined with the spiritual location leaves a lasting impression on many visitors. We continue our journey to Elkaduwa, high up on a tea estate, where we stay for 3 nights. Enroute, we visit the spice gardens and learn about spices and herbal medications. Overnight in Elkaduwa.Day 6 Meemure Trek, Village school In the morning take the Meemure Trek, which will take you through unique montane and sub montane forests and visit a local school. Overnight in Elkaduwa Day 7 Knuckles Wilderness, Pitawala-Patana grasslands After breakfast visit Sri Lanka's most rugged and picturesque terrain, Knuckles Wilderness. Day 8 To Kitulgala, dugout canoe ride on Kelani River, Kelani Valley Forest Reserve Just north of the town's lovely centerpiece, Kandy Lake lies the Temple of the Tooth, which houses Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist relic - a sacred tooth of the Buddha. This afternoon we will canoe across the Kelani River to reach the Kelani Valley Forest Reserve. On our trek we will see the rich bio-diversity of the area, enjoy a cup of tea at a local village tea booth. Overnight in Kithulgala. Day 9 Morning White-Water Rafting on the Kelani River (grade 2-3 rapids approx. 1hr Afternoon drive to the most famous hill station in Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya. Enroute, we will see neatly manicured tea plantations and picturesque waterfalls tumbling down hillsides. This is home of the Sri Lanka tea industry and this afternoon we have the opportunity to visit a tea factory. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya. Day 10 Horton Plains National Park Morning visit the cloud forests of Horton Plains National Park. Here, grasslands are beautiful and interspersed with patches of forest and unique high altitude vegetation. We trek along the escarpment to the famous World's End, where the plateau comes to a sudden end and makes a dramatic 880-meter drop (2887-ft. On a clear day you can see in the
distance a shimmering streak of water, which is the Indian Ocean more than 50miles away. Afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the surrounding picturesque tea growing country. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.Day 11 Yala National Park Morning drive down to the lowlands to Yala National Park. On the way stop to enjoy a cup of tea and witness the Ella Gap. Afternoon, our resident naturalist takes us along the Tree Trail in search of interesting vegetation and colorful bird life. Evening watch the BBC's famous documentary Leopard Hunters, which will provide excellent insight to Yala National Park. Overnight in Yala. Day 12 Yala National Park Morning and late afternoon game drives to Yala National Park. Yala has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world and provides an excellent opportunity to view leopards in the wild. Also be on the lookout for elephant, sloth bear, mugger crocodile, spotted deer, barking deer, wild boar, wild buffalo and mongoose. Overnight in Yala. Day 13 Yala National Park Morning visit Sithulpahuwa, an ancient hermitage and important centre of pilgrimage. It is still occupied by forest dwelling monks who use the stupas and rock caves as meditation cells and living quarters. Afternoon return to Yala National Park in search of leopard and more incredible wildlife. Overnight in Yala. Day 14 Scenic Drive to Colombo and City Tour Enjoy the breathtaking scenery, on the way to Colombo. Afternoon city tour of Colombo and time to enjoy a fair bargain in popular shopping areas. Overnight in Colombo. Day 15 Colombo's Beaches Morning free to explore or shop and proceed to Negombo.
